Bob Murphy is Professor and Chair in the Department of Economics at Boston College, where he teaches macroeconomics, international economics, and economic development. His research focuses on monetary policy and price inflation, with recent work exploring the behavior of inflation during and after the Great Recession.
Murphy has served as BC’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference since September 2017. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for 1A FAR, an organization of faculty athletics representatives at NCAA Division I institutions who compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Previously, Murphy was Director of the International Studies Program at Boston College, which offers an interdisciplinary major for students interested in international affairs. He also has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Economics.
Murphy has been a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and worked at the President’s Council of Economic Advisers during the Clinton and Reagan Administrations. His duties at the Council included analysis of macroeconomic and international trade issues, along with serving as editor of and contributor to the Weekly Economic Briefing of the President. Murphy has worked as a consultant to private industry, governments, and international institutions. He is the author of numerous articles in economics journals and the business press and is a frequent commentator for media outlets.
Professor Murphy joined the BC faculty in 1984. He holds a B.A. degree from Williams College and a Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
