AJ Cohen officially joined the Boston College women’s basketball staff in April of 2018. He arrived at the Heights after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Albany for two seasons alongside Head Coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee.
In his first season at Boston College, Cohen was crucial in the Eagles improvement as the team won 14 games, the most by the program since 2015-16 season.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Cohen was important in the growth freshman Makayla Dickens and Marnelle Garraud. Dickens averaged 11.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists and earned a spot on the All-ACC Freshman team. Garraud had a strong first season as she averaged 8.1 points and was named the St. Joseph’s Thanksgiving Tournament MVP after scoring 28 points in the championship game.
While at the University at Albany, Cohen helped the Great Danes continue the winning tradition as the team won a sixth consecutive America East Conference Championship and post back-to-back 20 win seasons.
Prior to the University of Albany, Cohen served as the graduate assistant coach at the University of Pikeville for two years. Cohen assisted on film exchange, scouting, game day preparation and daily practice plans in 2016, as the Bears advanced to the program’s first-ever NAIA Fab Four. He also served as the co-head coach of the junior varsity team for the program.
Cohen’s career began while an undergraduate at the University of Louisville. He served as an assistant to video coordinator and practice player for over two years under women’s basketball head coach Jeff Walz.
He helped with opponent scouting breakdown and filming home games as the assistant to video coordinator, and was a male practice player to help with scouting purposes.
Since April 2015, Cohen has served as an assistant coach of the All-Ohio Black EYBL Women’s Basketball program, which has included 2015 USA U16 National Team players. He developed practice plans and helps with implementation of playing strategies.
Cohen graduated from Louisville in December of 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in marketing. He is currently working on his MBA.
