Ryan Peffer has 17 years of college golf coaching experience. In 2019, he was promoted to associate head coach of the Boston College men’s and women’s golf teams. From 2014-2019, Peffer served as the assistant coach for both teams.
Since Peffer arrived in Chestnut Hill, Boston College’s men’s and women’s golf teams have continued to reach new heights. The men have been the top-ranked Division I team in New England for two of the last three years. Both teams have experienced program best finishes in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and have had NCAA Regional Championship qualifiers.
During Peffer’s tenure, the BC men’s team has amassed three team championships and eight individual titles. The men’s most notable tournament win came at the 2018 Clemson Intercollegiate. The Eagles beat No. 15 Clemson by two strokes, and collected wins against 10 other Division I teams, including No. 63 Notre Dame, UConn, and Southern Methodist. Later in the season, the Eagles outperformed No. 48 Louisville and Virginia Tech for a top-10 finish in the ACC Championship.
Three out of the past four years, a member of the men’s team has set the program record for the lowest single season stroke average. In 2016-2017, Matt Naumec set a new record averaging 72.64 strokes per tournament round. In 2017-2018, Naumec went even lower averaging 71.30. Then in 2019-2020, Christian Cavaliere set the current single-season individual record averaging 70.58 (-1.11) strokes per round.
In 2017-2018, the women’s team had a banner year, winning four tournaments. The women finished the season ranked No. 80 in Division I, and outperformed No. 14 Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, to finish tied for ninth with No. 67 Notre Dame at the ACC Championship. Individually, freshman Lois Kay Go won two tournaments, finished runner-up twice, earned All-ACC Honors, was named Boston College Athletics’ Female Rookie of the Year, and set the team record for the lowest single season stroke average at 72.48.
Peffer is also an award-winning PGA Professional Certified in Instruction. In addition to coaching the Eagles, he serves as the Director of Golf at Lynx Fitness Club in Boston’s Back Bay. Similar to the holistic approach that the BC staff uses to train student-athletes, Peffer and his team of PGA Professionals partner with Titleist Performance Institute Certified Athletic Trainers, and a sports dietitian to enhance their clients’ overall well-being and performance.
Prior to coaching the Eagles, Peffer served the assistant coach of the men’s and women’s golf teams at the College of William and Mary. During his three years at W&M, both Division I teams showed steady academic and competitive progress. In 2013, the W&M men’s team won the Whiting Turner Towson Invitational and the women’s team won the Bucknell Invitational.
Before coaching at William and Mary, Peffer was a PGA Professional at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech and the assistant golf coach at Hollins University. While coaching Hollins, the team lowered their scoring average by 37 strokes per round and improved their Division III Golfstat ranking from No. 80 to No. 49.
Prior to Hollins, Peffer was the head men's and women's coach at Queens University of Charlotte. Under his direction, the men improved their Division II Golfstat ranking to No. 25 and the women rose from No. 66 to No. 52. Peffer also served as an adjunct instructor for the Queens’ Professional Golf Management Program.
Peffer began his coaching career in 2004 as the assistant women’s golf coach at Franklin and Marshall College. In 2007, he was promoted to head coach. Under his tutelage, F&M won five tournaments and Elizabeth Boyer earned Medalist honors at the Centennial Conference Championship. From 2004-2009, F&M lowered their team scoring average a total of 56 strokes.
Peffer is currently an MBA candidate in Boston College’s Carroll School of Management. He earned his Master of Science in Leadership and Administration from Boston College and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Clarion University. As a student-athlete, Peffer captained the Clarion golf team to the 2002 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Regional. Individually, he was honored as a Cleveland Golf/GCAA All-America Scholar, three-time All-PSAC Team, four-time PSAC All-Academic, and the 2002 PSAC Championship MVP.
