The Boston College Pike's Peak Hockey Club is the team's support organization and is one of the oldest hockey booster clubs of its kind in the country.
Formed by members of the 1948-49 National Championship Team - Bernie Burke '49, Jimmy Fitzgerald '49, Butch Songin '49 and John Gallagher '49 - the club was established to promote and support the BC hockey program and recognize the accomplishments of the young men who wear the "Maroon and Gold." Its name honors the memories of the NCAA Ice Hockey Championship, Colorado Springs, the Broadmoor Hotel, the Rocky Mountains and the grandeur of Pike's Peak.
Since 1949 the Pike's Peak Hockey Club has taken great pride in our mission to enhance the quality of BC Hockey and we continue to support the program annually in a variety of ways. With scholarships accounting for the single largest budget expense for the hockey program, the Pike's Peak Hockey Club pledged $150,000 to endow a men's ice hockey scholarship in 2003. The gist was the largest by sports related organization in BC's history. Through the years, the Pike's Peak Hockey Club has also committed - and will continue to commit - money for program betterments, which in the past have included state-of the-art HD video equipment, refurbishments to the locker room and player's lounge, computers, office furniture and an ice machine for the athletic training room.
Membership is $300 annually and includes two passes to the Shea Room for game day hospitality and merriment.
EVENTS
Pike's Peak members enjoy exclusive opportunities and events throughout the year in support of the men's hockey program.
Season Opening Mass & Brunch (early fall)
One of the longstanding traditions of the Pike's Peak Hockey Club is hosting the annual Season Opening Mass and Brunch. At Boston College, we believe strongly in the spirituality of our student-athletes' college experience. Gathering as a family - players, families, coaches, Pike's Peak members, and school administrators - is a reminder of what Boston College is all about. In particular, it is a unique opportunity before the start of the season to introduce the club and our mission to the first-year players and a rare instance that all the key components of the Boston College men's hockey program get together on campus. Mass is celebrated at Saint Mary's Chapel, followed by brunch in the Irish Room at Gasson Hall.
Shea Room (game day)
The Club was the first sanctioned on-campus club with a room of its own at Boston College, and Pike's Peak members and their guests still enjoy gathering in the Shea Room before, at halftime and after men's home hockey games. Buffet dinner is available for purchase before the game starting 90 minutes before games, and a cash bar is available before, at halftime and after the game. Further, admission to the Shea Room is restricted to certain capacity and hours according to the University's entertainment license agreement with the City of Boston and university policies.
Skate with the Eagles
The Pike's Peak Hockey Club annually hosts "Skate with the Eagles," a special event for fans both young and old to skate with his/her favorite Eagle at Kelley Rink. A luncheon with the team follows and this event is an exclusive opportunity only open to Pike's Peak members.
Alumni Game (winter)
All former BC hockey players are annually invited to participate in an Alumni Game. It's gives our former players the occasion to come back and renew old friendships, lace up their skates, wear the Maroon and Gold jersey and go head-to-head against each other one more time, and a reception for the players follows. The event is open to all Pike's Peak Club members.
Postseason Hockey Banquet (spring)
The season-ending banquet has been our culminating event for years. We sponsor the team's banquet to honor the seniors and present the awards, as voted on by the Pike's Peak Club, officers, and board. Awards include the presentation of letter sweaters, the Captains' portraits, the Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award, the John "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award (player who best typifies BC Hockey), the William J. Flynn Coaches Award, the James E. Tiernan Memorial Award (most improved player) and the Norman F. Dailey Memorial Award (most valuable player). We also recognize the 25th anniversary and 50th anniversary teams.
Golf Tournament (late summer)
In 1989 the Pike's Peak Hockey Club held its first golf tournament with the original intent to gather some of former players for a day of golf and to renew old friendships. A by-product of the tournament was to raise money to help enhance the Boston College men's hockey program. Since then, the tournament has grown into the major fundraiser that the Pike's Peak Club sponsors and we now raise more than $25,000 for the program. Our venues have included the Wayland Country Club, Newton Commonwealth, Marlborough Country Club, Walpole Country Club, Hopkinton Country Club and Blue Hill Country Club. The field has grown from 32 players to more than 144-plus players with sell-outs the last several years. With support from Athletics, former players, Pike's Peak Club members and other friends of BC hockey, this is truly a memorable event.
