Eagles Fall to Bryant in Five Set Thriller

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (11-1, 0-0 ACC) fell to Bryant (7-7, AEC) 3-2, Saturday night to close the Eagle Classic, 25-27, 24-26, 25-23, 14-25.
Junior Audrey Ross led the Eagles offensive effort posting 18 kills contributing over 19 points. Sam Hoppes was close behind with 12 kills, adding three blocks and 13 points. Brooklyn Yelland held down the back row recording 22 digs. Sophomore Lucy Mott added 25 assists, Hanna Hoffman contributing 21.
The Bulldogs began the first set hot taking the lead early, 14-9, the Eagles trailing behind. A 10-2 run featuring kills from Herrington (2), Ehrlich and Ross and a pair of aces from Hoffman and Yelland put BC ahead, 19-17. The Eagles and the Bulldogs went point-for-point, evening the score at 23 and 24. A Bryant run secured the first set victory for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and Eagles tied 10 times in a back and forth second set. Bryant led by 1 at the media timeout, kills from Herrington (2), Rach and Hoppes evened the score at 16, 17 and 18. Not separated by more than three points all set, teams traded kills before tying it up again at 20. A 23-20 lead forced a Bryant timeout, and a 4-3 BC run secured the second set for the Eagles, 26-24.
Bryant established a 4-1 lead to start the third but a 6-4 BC run tied it up, 7-7. The teams tied again three times until Bryant took their biggest lead of the night, 18-13, forcing a BC timeout. Another BC run featuring kills from Hoppes (2) and Herrington brought BC within three, 19-22, forcing a Bulldog timeout. A mini 4-2 run by BC cut the deficit to one, but the Eagles fell in the third set, 25-23.
Despite tying four times, a 6-0 BC run brought the Eagles to a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. A six-point lead from the Eagles forced a Bryant timeout, down 18-12. Turning up the heat offensively, the Eagles took a 6-1 run with kills from Rach (2) and Hoppes, creating a 10-point lead, the largest lead of the night. Two final kills from Roach and Ross secured the fourth set for the Eagles, 25-14.
Boston College established a 5-3 lead to start the fifth behind kills from Ross and Ehrlich (2). The Bulldogs and Eagles tied four more times until a kill by Rach and stonewall block by Roach and Herrington pushed BC to a 12-10 lead, forcing a Bryant timeout. Despite another big kill from Herrington, the Bulldogs took the fifth set 15-13.
