BOSTON - The Sports Museum at TD Garden unveiled a new exhibit this morning in honor of Pete Frates '07. The exhibit showcases his extraordinary life from his high school athletic career at St. John's Prep to his tenure as captain of the Boston College baseball team to the ALS diagnosis that led to a worldwide fundraising phenomenon. In the summer of 2014, Frates championed the Ice Bucket Challenge through social media, which generated more than $1 billion for ALS.Â
As a player, Frates set a modern BC record with eight RBIs in one game, going 4-for-6 with a grand slam, a three-run homer, and an RBI double at Maryland on April 14, 2007. During his junior year, he went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs in the Eagles' 10-2 win over Harvard in the Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park.
Frates rejoined the Eagles staff in 2012 as the Director of Baseball Operations. Along with his BC baseball duties, Frates works to raise awareness and education about ALS and funds for research. He also created the Baseball Mentor Night, when former players speak to current Eagles about life after baseball. He and his family established the Pete Frates #3 Fund to help subsidize medical care and expenses not covered by health insurance.
In 2016, Frates's number 3 was retired, becoming only the second player in history to have his jersey retired. Eddie Pellagrini's 13 is the only other retired number by the program.Â
The new exhibit will feature memorabilia such as the iconic ice bucket, his Boston College baseball jersey, bat & batting helmet, his 2017 NCAA Inspiration Award, personal photographs, and other items.Â
