
Volleyball Tops Cal 3-1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College Eagles (13-5, 2-4 ACC) recorded a 3-1 win (27-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-11) over Cal (5-11, 2-4 ACC) Sunday afternoon at the Margot Connell Center.

Co-captian Audrey Ross led the Eagles recording 19 kills and 20 points. Junior Sam Hoppes trailed posting 13 kills and 15 points. Sophomore Lucy Mott guided the offensive front posting 27 assists. Danica Rach tallied five aces, seven kills and 13 points. Freshman Bella Ehrlich posted three consecutive aces and 2.5 total blocks.Â

The Golden Bears got on the board first but the Eagles were close behind as Hoppes opened up the scoring with two kills and an ace. The Eagles and Golden Bears even the score seven times to open the set until a 5-0 BC run put the Eagles up, 14-11, forcing a Cal timeout. A 3-0 scoring run from Cal closed the gap, evening the score at 14 all. Despite tying it up again at 21, an ace from Rach and kill from Hoppes pushed the Eagles to a three point lead, but Cal quickly responded. Going point-for-point, teams tied it up again at 24 and 25 before back-to-back kills from Ross secured the first set, 27-25.

The Eagles and Golden Bears were tied early at 7-7, but with a 9-6 BC run following back-to-back aces from Rach, the Eagles led 15-13 at the media timeout. Despite evening the score again at 16, kills from Rach (2) and Herrington pushed the eagles to a 19-17 lead. Cal quickly responded with a 3-1 scoring run to tie it up at 20 all. Going point-for-point, teams tied it up again at 22 before a Cal kill and a BC attack error brought the Golden Bears to set point. Cal took the second set 25-22.

The Golden Bears came out strong with an early 3-0 run to take the lead. The Eagles responded as Ross came up with three back-to-back-to-back kills to tie it up at 4-4. A 6-3 Cal run put the Golden Bears up 11-6, forcing a BC timeout. A 5-0 run from the Eagles evened the score at 11-11, forcing a Cal timeout. With an 8-4 Eagle run, BC took a 18-15 lead over the Golden Bears. Maintaining their lead, kills from Ehrlich, Herrington, Ross (2), Hoppes and Rach assisted the offensive effort, securing the third set 25-21.

Building off their third set momentum, the Eagles opened up the scoring to start the fourth. Though teams evened the score at 6, a 9-0 BC scoring run featuring three aces from Ehrlich brought the Eagles to a 15-6 lead. The Eagles offense was on fire, maintaining the lead and lengthening the gap to 13 with kills from Hoppes, Ross (2) and Rach. A final kill from Ehrlich secured the fourth set for the Eagles, 25-11.
