Eagles Find Speed at Lake Wheeler Invitational
April 27, 2024 | Rowing
RALEIGH, N.C.-- Eighteen crews enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures on Friday and Saturday for two days of racing at the Lake Wheeler Invitational. The first day of racing featured competition throughout the morning and afternoon on Lake Wheeler. The boats raced for a third and final time Saturday morning.Â
The Eagles best finish on Friday was fourth by the varsity eight in the morning session of racing. The Boston College boat crossed in a time of 6:59.410, behind Miami, Alabama, and Duke, and ahead of Tulsa and Kansas. Racing in the V8+ for BC was coxswain Madelyn Stevens, Larrabee Pollack, Lauren Meath, Lauren Bauer, Lucy Barratt, Peyton Smith, Carly Griffin, Lauren Schramm, and Sasha Bocek.
Saturday morning racing was overcast with temperatures in the upper 60s, the wind blew at about 6 mph.Â
Boston College continued the momentum into Saturday with the third varsity eight having the best performance of the regatta. The third varsity 8+ finished with a time of 7:17.775, ahead of Navy, North Carolina, and Louisville. Duke finished with a winning time of 7:06.835. The third place finish was made up of coxswain Kendra Schmidt, Elliana Steely, Amelia Sanger, Grace Bohan, Ally Johnson, Charlotte Cochener, Reagan Rock, Ellis Craige, and Neave Anderson.
Coach Hollowell on the team's performance:Â
"The team made good progress relative to last year, it was great to see the First Varsity 8+ post wins over Tulsa, Navy, and Kansas, as well as posting faster times than Georgetown and UNC. They also had the closest margin to BU and Clemson as we've had in my time here."
"Overall the group learned a lot from some fast racing and tight margins. A focus was to grow and develop from round to round and all five crews did that. I'm excited to see the team translate our work this weekend to a heats/finals format next weekend."
The Eagles return to action Sunday, May 5 in Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints Regatta.Â
