SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Five student-athletes from the Boston College men's hockey team were recognized as All-Americans by the American Hockey Coaches Association on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and freshmen Jacob Fowler (Melbourne, Fla.) and Will Smith (Lexington, Mass.) were named to the first team while freshmen Ryan Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) and Gabe Perreault (Hinsdale, Ill.) earned spots on the second team.
Â
Boston College's five selections were the most among any program.
Â
Gauthier, a Hockey East First Team All-Star and Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist, leads the country in goals with 38 and in game-winning goals with 10. With his goal in the Frozen Four National Semifinal against Michigan, he tied David Emma (1989-90) and Scott Harlow (1985-86) for the most in a single season in program history. Gauthier became just the second player since 2000 to score 38 goals in one season.
Â
The Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, a Hockey East First Team All-Star and Mike Richter Award Finalist, Fowler has had a superb season between the pipes in his first campaign with the Eagles. His 32 wins this year are the most by a freshman in a single season in NCAA history. Fowler posted his third shutout of the season on Thursday evening in the 4-0 victory over Michigan in the Frozen Four. Fowler leads the country in winning percentage (.855), is fourth in save percentage (.926) and eighth in goals against average (2.14).
Â
Smith earns the first team nod after leading the country in points with 71. With his two goals in the National Semifinal win over Michigan, Smith became the 11th Eagle in program history to record 70 points in a single season and first since Johnny Gaudreau in 2013-14. His 71 points and 46 assists are the most by a freshman in a single season in program history as well as his assists being tied for the second-most by any BC player in a season. Last month, Smith became the first freshman to score a hat trick in the Hockey East Championship when he tallied four goals to lead the Eagles to its 12th Hockey East Tournament Championship.
Â
Leonard currently ranks fifth nationally in points per game with 1.50, boasting 60 points with 31 goals and 29 assists. A Hockey East Second Team All-Star, he broke the program record for goals in a season by a freshman, breaking the previous mark set by Brian Gionta in 1997-98. With his assist against the Wolverines, Leonard became just the fourth BC freshman to record 60 or more points. Leonard was also named the Most Outstanding Player at the Providence Regional after recording consecutive two-goal performances.
Â
Rounding out the honorees was Hockey East Second Team All-Star Perreault. The forward also joined the 60-point club as a freshman when he recorded three points, one goal and two assists, in the National Semifinal against the Wolverines. With 41 assists on the season, Leonard sits third in program history for assists by a freshman. He currently sits second in Division 1 in points per game with 1.71.
Â
The five honorees is the most that the Eagles have ever had in one season and the fourth time in which Boston College had three selections to the first team.
