January 13, 2024 | Men's Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Chase Yoder converted a rebound near the left post with 4:30 left in regulation and No. 9 Providence held on for a 4-3 Hockey East victory over No. 1 Boston College on Saturday night at Schneider Arena.
Â
The Friars earned a split in the weekend home-and-home series, improving to 11-6-2 (5-4-2 HEA). The Eagles dropped to 14-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Hockey East.
Â
Sophomore Oskar Jellvik and rookies Will Smith and Gabe Perreault scored for Boston College, which lost for just the second time in its last 10 games.
Â
BC took the lead midway through the first period when Andre Gasseau threaded a pass through the right circle to Jellvik, who deked to his forehand and lifted a shot into the roof of the net glove side. Cutter Gauthier collected the secondary assist on the play, extending his career-high point streak to nine games.
Â
Providence answered late in the second period as Yoder tipped a left wing shot-pass from Hudson Malinoski past Jacob Fowler (32 saves) from the edge of the crease.
Â
20 seconds later, Smith broke into the PC zone along the left wing off a Perreault feed and roofed the puck short side high on Philip Svedeback, restoring the Eagles' lead.
Â
Jamie Engelbert snuck a shot glove side through a partial screen from the high slot just 1:27 into the third to knot the score once again.
Â
Perreault pushed the Eagles back in front at 6:26 on the power play as he took a pass on the weak side from Smith in the left circle and beat a sprawling Svedeback. Ryan Leonard collected an assist on the play as the three rookie linemates posted a combined six points.
Â
Providence knotted the score at 3-3 when Bennett Schimek finished a centering pass from Graham Gamache near the midway point of the third. Yoder's rebound off Fowler's right pad at 15:30 gave the Friars their first lead of the night.
Â
BC pulled Fowler for an extra skater with 1:44 remaining, but couldn't find an equalizer. Both teams finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play.
