BC men's golfers have shined on the course during the first few weeks of summer
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College men's golfers - past and present - were on display throughout the month of June.
Christian Cavaliere '20 played on one of golf's biggest stages - the U.S. Open. Â Competing as an amateur, Cavaliere advanced through the local and final qualifiers to earn his spot in the field of the 123rd U.S. Open. Â The Katonah, N.Y. product posted an opening round 72 (+2), putting him at fifth among all amateurs through the opening round of play.
"It was a great time, the whole experience was incredible," said Cavaliere. "I was so happy to have my family and friends here to enjoy it with me, and thankful that they all came out and flew all this way. I love golf, I love doing this, so overall this was an amazing experience."
He became the first BC golfer since Matt Naumec '19 to earn a spot in the major golf championship. Â Naumec earned a spot in the field of the 119th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 2019. Â
Cameron Harlock tied for fourth at the Boyd Quaich Memorial Golf Tournament, held June 26-29 at the famed St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland. Â Harlock was 10-under for the 72-hole tournament, posting scores of 70 and 71 on the old course and 68 and 67 on the new course. Â Earlier in the month, Harlock placed 41st in the St. Andrews Links Trophy, carding scores of 68 on the new course, and 71-77-73 on the old course.
Jack Pogorelc finished in 13th at the Kendridge Invitational, held June 1-4 in Charlottesville, Va. at the Farmington Country Club's Main Course. Â Pogorelc was 2-over for the 54-hole tournament, carding scores of 72 and 73 in the opening two rounds before finishing with a 3-under 67.
Mac Bredahl began his summer earning a spot in the 122nd New Jersey Amateur Championship. The graduate student tied for 13th place in his qualifier, advancing to the field of the Championship, held July 10-12 at Manasquan River Golf Club. Bredahl also narrowly missed the cut in the qualifier for the 2023 New England Amateur, carding a 76 on June 7 at the Bellingham Country Club.
Ben Hong narrowly missed the cut at the California Amateur, making a late push thanks to a second round 70 (-2) at Lake Merced Golf Course.
A trio of BC newcomers have also put red numbers up on leaderboards around the globe. Â Christian Emmerich tied for 38th place at the Mass Open, held at TPC Boston. Â After an opening round 75, the graduate student from Swampscott carded a second round 70 (-2) and a final round 73 (+1). Â
Incoming freshman Ben Paylor tied for first in his qualifying round for the Texas Junior Amateur, carding a 2-over 74. Â The 97th Texas Junior Amateur will be held July 24-26 at the White Bluff Resort in Whitney, Texas. Â Paylor also tied for 20th (72-73-76=221) at the Southern Junior, held June 14-16 at Baton Rouge Country Club in Louisiana and tied for ninth (76-73-72=221) at the AJGA Patrick Reed tournament on June 20-22 at the Woodlands Country Club.
Fellow freshman Markus Lam was fourth at the Singapore Junior Golf Championship, contested June 6-9 at the Seletar Country Club. Â Lam was tied for the tournament lead through 36 holes. Â
