July 10, 2023 | Baseball
Travis Honeyman and Joe Vetrano mark the 90th and 91st Eagles to get drafted
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Two members of the Boston College Baseball team heard their name called on Day Two of the 2023 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon. Travis Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y) was the first Eagle drafted, going 90th overall to the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round. Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) followed, going in the fifth round, 163rd overall to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he will join Birdball alum Emmet Sheehan in the organization.
After appearing in fourteen games in 2021, Travis Honeyman moved into an everyday role over the next two seasons, batting .317 over that stretch. With experience in both left and right field, Honeyman slashed .304 in 39 games this season, with a .534 slugging percentage and .383 on-base percentage, driving in 30 runs with 15 doubles, two stolen bases, two triples, and six home runs, landing him on the 2023 All-ACC Third Team. Honeyman is the fourth Eagle to get drafted by the Cardinals, and the first since Anthony Melchionda in 2012.
Joe Vetrano blossomed in the first-base, cleanup role over the last two seasons. Over that stretch, Vetrano started 108 of 110 possible games, hitting .312 with 135 hits, 22 doubles, 116 runs batted-in, and 35 home-runs. In 2023, Vetrano belted 22 home runs, the second-most in a single season in program history, and helped power the Eagles to a program-record 16 ACC wins, and their second Regional Finals appearance since 2016. Vetrano's 64 RBI this season are also good for second-most in Boston College history, with his breakout 2023 campaign landing him Regional MVP, All-Region Second Team, and All-ACC Third Team honors. Vetrano marks the 7th Eagle to go to the Dodgers, and the first since his former teammate Emmet Sheehan went to LA in the 2022 draft.
The 2023 MLB Draft will continue on Tuesday with rounds 11 through 20.
