Nine Former Eagles Start Quest for Stanley Cup
April 17, 2023 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A total of nine former Boston College men's hockey players begin their quest for hockey's ultimate prize as the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight across the NHL.
BC has three former players – Casey Fitzgerald, Spencer Knight and Colin White – on the roster of the Florida Panthers, who face the Boston Bruins in Game 1 tonight at TD Garden. Coming off a 31-goal regular season, Matt Boldy and the Minnesota Wild are in Dallas to play the Stars.
Chris Kreider, who scored 36 goals for the New York Rangers during the regular season, will take on Miles Wood and the New Jersey Devils in the first round beginning on Tuesday night. Alex Newhook and the Colorado Avalanche begin their Stanley Cup defense against the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday, while Joseph Woll and the Toronto Maple Leafs face the Tampa Bay Lightning.
A total of 23 former Eagles played at least one game in the NHL this season, which led all Hockey East schools and ranked third in all of Division I behind only Minnesota and Michigan. Since the end of the 2020-21 NCAA season, 10 different Eagles have made their NHL debuts.
Boston College ranks second in NCAA history with 21 names on the Stanley Cup, most recently adding Newhook last year.
