STORRS, Conn. – Justin Pearson netted a hat trick for No. 17 UConn in the regular season finale as the Huskies held off a late surge to defeat Boston College 6-5 in Hockey East play on Saturday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.
The Eagles closed the regular season at 13-15-6 overall and 8-11-5 in Hockey East. BC is the No. 8 seed in the Hockey East Tournament and will host No. 9 seed UMass in the Opening Round next Wednesday night at Kelley Rink on NESN+.
The Huskies improved to 20-11-3 (13-9-2 HEA) and clinched the three-game regular season series against the Eagles 2-1-0.
Making his first start of the season, junior Henry Wilder made several impressive saves in the opening minute, but Pearson lifted a backhand over his glove from the low slot 1:31 into the contest to open the scoring.
Captain Marshall Warren put the Eagles on the board with one second left on a power play, finding the bottom left corner from inside the right faceoff dot at 5:37 of the first.
UConn went back ahead when Ty Amonte finished a rebound at the right post, but rookie Lukas Gustafsson knotted things up again as he picked the right corner glove side with five seconds remaining in the period.
The Huskies took a major penalty in the second period but a Boston College minor negated two minutes of the power play. During the 4-on-4 situation, Matthew Wood finished a 2-on-1 with Hudson Schandor at 12:40 to put the Huskies back on top for good.
Pearson added his second of the night on the power play with 2:11 left in the middle frame, sneaking a shot over Wilder's blocker from the low slot.
On another UConn power play early in the third period, Pearson capped off his hat trick when he finished a centering pass from Samu Salminen high glove side from the slot.
Andre Gasseau quickly pulled a goal back on the power play for the Eagles, firing a shot high blocker side from the right faceoff dot, but the Huskies restored their three-goal lead at 5:21 through Jake Black.
Oskar Jellvik buried a right wing one-timer from Aidan Hreschuk to make it a 6-4 game at 12:27, and Gustafsson set up Colby Ambrosio at the right doorstep with Wilder pulled to cut the deficit to one with 2:05 remaining.
Nikita Nesterenko then hit the left post from a weak angle but was called for tripping seconds later, and UConn held on for the victory.
Wilder closed the night with 27 saves.
