Eagles Drop Double Overtime Heartbreaker in Hockey East Quarterfinal
March 11, 2023 | Men's Hockey
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Mick Messner's left wing shot trickled over the goal line with 11:40 left in double overtime on Saturday night as No. 2 seed Merrimack defeated No. 8 seed Boston College 1-0 in the Hockey East Quarterfinal at Lawler Rink.
The Eagles closed their season with a record of 14-16-6, while the Warriors improved to 22-12-2 and advanced to TD Garden for the Semifinal next Friday.
Graduate goaltender Mitch Benson kept Merrimack at bay with 23 saves over the first two periods and stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced in his final NCAA game. His counterpart Hugo Ollas registered 36 saves for the shutout.
The Eagles' best chance of the first period came when Cutter Gauthier rang the left post with a heavy power play one-timer from the right wing circle.
Boston College nearly took the lead just before a power play expired late in the second period, but Ollas reached out his left pad at the post to deny Oskar Jellvik on a right wing one-timer.
Mike Posma had a quality shorthanded bid in the third period off a feed from Nikita Nesterenko, but Ollas closed his pads to deny Posma's backhander.
Boston College out-shot Merrimack 13-6 in the first overtime. Gauthier came inches away from winning the game but rang the right post from the high slot in the final minute. The Eagles also successfully killed a minor penalty late in the first OT session.
In the second overtime, Ryan Leibold skated up the left wing for Merrimack and laid a pass back near the dot to Messner, who one-timed a shot that trickled through Benson and over the goal line.
