Quartet of Eagles Earn Hockey East All-Star Honors

Hannah Bilka and Cayla Barnes have earned All-Star accolades for the fourth time in their careers.
AMESBURY, Mass. – A quartet of Boston College women's hockey players were recognized by Hockey East on Friday morning when the league office announced the 2022-23 all-star teams. Hannah Bilka, Cayla Barnes and Abigail Levy were named Hockey East Second Team All-Stars while Abby Newhook was named a Hockey East Third-Team All-Star.

Bilka earns her fourth consecutive all-star honor after finishing tied for fourth overall in conference scoring with 32 points on eight goals and 24 assists. The captain's 1.28 points per game average was the fourth-best mark in Hockey East play. Bilka's 24 assists in conference games tied for second most in the league while her 3.76 shots per game ranked sixth. The Coppell, Texas native factored in to nine game-winning goals for BC in league games, scoring two while assisting on seven, and added one short-handed goal. Bilka had nine multi-point outings in league games, including two four-point efforts. She was named the Hockey East Player of the Month for September/October and has earned four Player of the Week honors this season. Overall on the year, Bilka leads BC with a career-high 39 points and 27 assists and has 12 multi-point efforts. Bilka also has a first-team nod in 2022, a third-team honor in 2021 and a second-team honor in 2020 to her name.

In 22 conference contests this season, Levy posted a .949 save percentage, 1.69 goals against average and four shutouts. The graduate student posted at least 30 saves in six of those games, at least 35 stops in four games and at least 40 saves in four contests. The alternate captain led the league in saves (687) and was second in saves per game (31.23) in conference play. Levy is the first goaltender in the 21-year Hockey East history to finish a full conference slate (at least 20 games played) with a save percentage above .945 and a goals against average below 1.75 while making at least 30 saves per game. Levy, who is a semifinalist for the National Goaltender of the Year Award for the second consecutive season, was named the Hockey East Player of the Week once during the regular season and earned two Hockey East Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Week awards. Overall on the year, Levy is 15-12-1 with a 1.72 goals against average and .948 save percentage. The Congers, N.Y. native ranks second in the nation with her .948 save percentage but is first among goaltenders who make at least 20 saves per game. Levy, who earned the PNC Bank Three Stars Award earlier this week, was also announced as the runner up for the Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Year.

Barnes put up 11 points off of three goals and eight assists in 27 league games while ranking sixth in blocked shots with 45 and finishing second overall among blue liners with 71 shots on goal. The two-year captain's 11 points in Hockey East contests was ninth among league defenders. In total on the year, Barnes has 17 points on six goals and 11 assists to go with a team-leading 57 blocked shots and has helped the BC penalty-kill unit consistently rank among the top five in the nation. The Eastvale, Calif. native earns her fourth career all-star honor after a first-team nod in 2021, a second-team honor in 2020 and a third-team spot in 2019. Earlier this week, Barnes was also announced as the runner-up for the Army ROTC Best Defender Award.

Newhook earns her first career Hockey East All-Star nod after being the league Rookie of the Year and unanimous All-Rookie Team selection a season ago. The St. John's, Newfoundland native tied for fifth in the league with her 16 goals and finished tied for eighth overall in points with 28. Newhook tied for the league lead in game-winning goals in Hockey East games this season with six and was the only player in the league this season to score more than five game-winning goals while also scoring a short-handed goal. Her 89 shots on goal ranked 10th in Hockey East. Overall on the year, Newhook has a career-high 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points and has fired a career-high 110 shots on goal while also setting career-bests in blocked shots (9), face-off wins (105), power-play goals (2) and short-handed goals (1).
