Pete Watson wins 2023 Northeast Region Women's Coach of the Year
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Head Coach Pete Watson won the Ray Treacy Award for Northeast Region Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year on Tuesday afternoon.Â
Watson was recognized as the women's regional Cross Country coach of the year on Tuesday by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the 2023 season. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18. Only individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
Watson, who is in his second year in charge of the program, is coming off a very successful 2023 Cross Country campaign. The Eagles placed second overall as a Women's team at the 2023 NCAA Northeast Regional, securing them an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships in Charlottesville, Virginia. This was the first berth to the NCAA Championships for the Eagles since 2019. Boston College also placed sixth overall as a Women's team at the 2023 ACC Championships.
The Eagles have had many athletes have career years this season due to coach Watson and his staff's impact since taking over the program. Senior Emma Tavella and and junior Lily Flynn have both shined for the Eagles since transferring from UCLA and Stanford respectively. Tavella finished eighth overall out of 265 runners at the Northeast Regional to lead the Eagles, while also placing 21st overall at the ACC Championships. Flynn has also made a big impact this year, placing 21st at the Northeast Regional and 42nd at the ACC Championships. Watson has not only made impact moves with the transfer portal, but has also been able to attract top freshmen to run for Boston College. Freshmen Ella Fadil and Natalie Millerovahave come to the heights and contributed to the success of the team right away. Fadil and Millerova both finished in the top 100 at the ACC Championships and the Northeast Regional, helping the Eagles clinch a berth to the NCAA Championships.Â
Watson will look to continue his success into the indoor track and field season, as the Eagles begin on Dec. 2 in Boston.Â
