No. 20 Huskies Grind Out 2-1 Victory Over Boston College
January 31, 2023 | Men's Hockey
BOSTON – Jakov Novak's backhander early in the third period proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 Hockey East victory for No. 20 Northeastern over Boston College on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
The schools split their three-game Hockey East regular season series 1-1-1. The Eagles dropped to 9-10-5 (5-7-4 HEA) while the Huskies improved to 13-9-3 (11-4-2 HEA).
BC carried the play with a pair of early power plays in the first period, but the Huskies killed off both. Cutter Gauthier hit the left post from the right wing and the Eagles posted nine of the game's first 11 shots on goal.
Matt Choupani opened the scoring for Northeastern with 4:13 left in the opening frame, tapping a loose puck past Mitch Benson from the top of the crease.
Boston College responded early in the second as Connor Joyce won a foot race on the forecheck behind the NU net, skated out to the top of the left circle, and threw a shot on net that Christian O'Neill tipped past Devon Levi (29 saves) short side.
The Huskies restored their lead when Novak slipped a backhand high glove side with 2:45 elapsed in the third period, which proved to be the game-winner.
Boston College created a quality shorthanded chance on a 3-on-2 in the closing minutes, but missed the net against a sprawling Levi from the low right circle. Another minor penalty with 54 seconds remaining prevented Benson from being pulled and NU held on to secure the points.
BC out-shot Northeastern 30-26 and won the faceoff battle 32-21.
The Eagles hit the road again on Friday night when they travel to the Tsongas Center to face UMass Lowell at 7:15 p.m. on NESN.
