
BC Wins Five-Set Thriller to Open New Era of Volleyball

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team erased an early deficit to defeat Duke, 3-2, at the Connell Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon in its ACC home opener. The win marked the program's first match at its new court inside the Connell Recreation Center and was played in front of a standing-room only crowd of 534 spectators.
The win propelled the Eagles to 12-3, matching the best start in program history, and evened their record at 1-1 in the ACC. Boston College won by set scores of 22-25, 25-12, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-12.
BC clinched the match on a kill from junior outside hitter Katrina Jensen (Temecula, Calif.) to win the fifth set, 15-12. Jensen tied for the team-high in kills at 15 despite not entering the match until late in the second set.
In the fifth, Duke (9-4, 0-2 ACC) went in front early 2-0 and led 8-7 at the switch. The Eagles went in front 9-8 on back-to-back blocks involving graduate middle blocker Kate Brennan (Enndicott, N.Y.) and then broke a 9-9 tie as junior outside hitter Alayna Crabtree (Normal, Ill.) knocked down her 15th kill and followed with an ace.
Trailing one set to none, Boston College dominated the second. The Eagles played error-free, hitting .625 in the set. Crabtree went for eight kills on 11 swings.
Duke's Gracie Johnson led all players with 20 kills and added 14 digs in a double-double effort. Crabtree posted a 15-kill, 12-dig double-double for the Eagles.
Brennan and senior Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) also reached double figures in kills for the Eagles at 10 and 11, respectively. Brennan hit .643 with six blocks.
Junior setter Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) guided the offense with 31 assists, while classmate Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.) added 23. Junior libero Anna Murphy (Zionsville, Ind.) picked up a match-high 29 digs.
Boston College is back in action Wednesday night for a non-conference tilt against Bryant at 7 p.m.at home.
