May 02, 2022 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A total of 10 former Boston College men's hockey players begin their quest for hockey's ultimate prize as the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tonight across the NHL.
Matt Boldy is the only former Eagle in action tonight when the Minnesota Wild host the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of the first round on ESPN at 9:30 p.m. (ET). Boldy has burst onto the scene since scoring in his NHL debut against the Bruins at TD Garden, posting 39 points on 15 goals and 24 assists in 47 games.Â
Joining Boldy in the Western Conference are former classmate Alex Newhook of the No. 1 seed Colorado Avalanche, along with Johnny Gaudreau and Noah Hanifin of the Pacific Division champion Calgary Flames. Gaudreau was tied for second in the NHL this season with 115 points, including his first career 40-goal campaign.
In the Eastern Conference, four Eagles will take the ice in one series when Brian Boyle, Brian Dumoulin and Mike Matheson of the Pittsburgh Penguins face Chris Kreider and the New York Rangers starting on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Kreider ranked third in the league this season with 52 goals, becoming only the fourth player in team history to score 50.Â
Goaltender Spencer Knight will compete in the East for the Florida Panthers, who won the President's Trophy with the top point total in the NHL. Florida hosts the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Marc McLaughlin scored three goals in 11 games for the Bruins, who travel to Carolina in the first round of the postseason.
A total of 24 former Eagles played at least one game in the NHL this season, which led all Hockey East schools and was tied for third in all of Division I. Since the end of the 2020-21 NCAA season, eight different Eagles have made their NHL debuts.Â
Boston College ranks second in NCAA history with 20 names on the Stanley Cup, most recently adding Zach Sanford (St. Louis) in 2019.
