Doton Adds Nina Klein to Field Hockey Staff
April 27, 2022 | Field Hockey
"We are excited to welcome Nina to the Boston College field hockey program," said Doton. "Nina was an outstanding player at UConn and anytime you can add someone who has won a national championship, let alone multiple national championships, is a win for our program. We can't wait to get started."Â
Klein arrives to the Heights after spending four seasons at Quinnipiac, where she worked with the defenders and goalkeepers throughout her first three seasons with the program. In 2020-21, Klein coached defender Jess Halley to Second Team NFHCA All-Mideast Region and Second Team All-BIG EAST honors
"I am primarily motivated by good people and a positive, unyielding vision," mentioned Klein. "Kelly and Mark are building something truly special, and I am eager to join this team and program. I am eternally grateful to Head Coach Becca Main, (from Quinnipiac University) for catapulting me into the coaching world in 2018, and this position is hands-down the best opportunity for me in my coaching career right now."
Â
Prior to Quinnipiac, Klein was a standout goalkeeper for the UConn Huskies throughout her five years in Storrs, guiding the program to three national championships in that span. She earned All-American honors, was named NFHCA All-Mideast Region three straight years, and was an All-BIG EAST selection three years in a row.Â
She also competed with the USA Field Hockey Women's National Development Team during her time as a coach with the Bobcats. In Spring of 2019, Klein attended several training camps and a training trip with USA Field Hockey. Over that summer, Klein competed at the USA Field hockey Young Women's National Championship and earned another invite to teh USA Field Hockey Women's National Development Team selection camp in January 2020.
Klein also has significant playing experience in the United States national team program. In January 2018, she was one of a select group of 340 collegiate athletes who participated in the United States National Field Hockey Team trials in Pennsylvania. While in high school, she competed with the U17 Junior National Team in 2012, while her U19 Teams earned the gold in 2011 and 2012 at the USA Field Hockey National Festival.
Thoughts on becoming part of the BCFH program:Â I am so grateful to be given the tremendous opportunity of working alongside an entire group of amazing people at Boston College. Kelly and Mark are truly special people and when I stepped onto campus for my interview, I was enthralled by what Boston College Field Hockey had to offer. After each meeting during the interview process, the visit just got better and better. It is an honor and privilege to work for an institution that has such a rich history of tradition, and I cannot wait to get to work. I look forward to competing for ACC Championships and postseason success year in and year out.Â
Your vision/perception of the program:Â Boston College is a place where you can get a world-class education and compete at the highest level of sport; all while enjoying the robust city of Boston. The field hockey program is built on the foundation of hard work, grit, and service to others. I am eager to join a culture that embodies these values. Boston College is a place where you can win championships and have fun doing it. I envision joining a field hockey program that is rich in the values of belongingness, hard-work, and competitiveness.
How winning at UConn helps you as a coach:Â As a student-athlete at UConn I lost as many games as you can count on one hand over the course of 4 years. I came from a program that went over 50% in National Championships over a course of 5 years. Nancy Stevens (who is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I Field Hockey) created a culture that was rooted in hard-work, problem-solving and complete autonomy on the field hockey pitch. I believe that the game of field hockey is becoming the player's sport and I am eager to create an environment where our athletes can learn, grow, and make mistakes that will ultimately propel them to greatness. Field Hockey is not a game of perfection, and I intend to create an environment that fosters resilience and grit. I hope to incorporate a lot of what I learned at UConn to continue to continue to grow the championship culture at Boston College.Â
