Eagles Catch Fire in Singles And Roll Against Clemson For Second Straight
March 04, 2022 | Women's Tennis
Four Eagles capture straight set victories, move to 2-1 in the ACC
WEYMOUTH, Mass. -- Following the program's first win at Virginia Tech last weekend, the Eagles picked up right where they left off on Friday night, taking down Clemson 5-2 for their second straight win, pushing them to 2-1 in the ACC. The doubles team of Laura Lopez and Marice Aguiar, who put together such a strong fall campaign, won their match 6-4, but Clemson rallied to take the point in the third doubles match.Â
Clemson's momentum stopped there, however. Marice Aguiar, who won in straight sets against the Hokies last weekend, did not drop a single game in her singles match and really set the tone for the Eagles, who captured five of six singles points. Stephanie Sanchez, who earned her first ACC win last weekend, put the Eagles up 2-1 with a straight set victory of her own. Plobrung Plipuech added a straight set singles win before Natasha Irani clinched the match with the 120th win of her Boston College career.Â
"We showed a lot of resiliency after we dropped a tough, hard-fought doubles point. This team competes really well. We put a lot of balls in play and we fight hard," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "We are developing a special chemistry. In singles we stayed calm, we believed in ourselves and we found a way. Maria had an incredible day. Laura saved two match points and dug deep. Ice played so smartly. Natasha was a nightmare for her opponent. Sophie showed a lot of heart. Stephanie is getting better by the hour. Hailey is really becoming a force in the doubles lineup and she and Muskan are ready to go in singles too. Very exciting win for our team!"
The Eagles will look to keep it rolling at home against Georgia Tech on Sunday morning at 10:00.Â
