Ferrari Earns Another Top-10 in Middlebury Giant Slalom
February 22, 2022 | Skiing
HANCOCK, Vt. – Chiara Maria Ferrari posted the second top-10 and third top-15 finishes of her freshman season over the weekend at the Middlebury Carnival at the Middlebury Snow Bowl.Â
Ferrari moved up to 11th place in the EISA women's giant slalom rankings with one race remaining on the schedule.
The Italian rookie placed seventh overall in the giant slalom on Saturday for her best finish of the season, then took 12th in Sunday's giant slalom which served as a makeup for the postponed UVM Carnival.
"What Chiara is doing as a freshmen is unprecedented at Boston College," said head coach Chuck Carmone. "The way she attacks in all kinds of weather and conditions is really fun to watch and she's inspiring her teammates too."
"It's been an incredibly demanding season both mentally and physically with brutal weather changing every other day," added Carmone. "We've had to remain incredibly adaptable and positive to roll with an ever-changing schedule and conditions. I'm really proud of the way the entire team has been working hard in training and our aggressive approach at the Carnivals on race day this season. We aren't always getting the results we want, but the effort and hard-charging attitude is 100% there."
Following Ferrari in Saturday's GS were Morgan Ellis in 32nd place and classmate Lauren Hunter in 47th. Ferrari helped lead the women to seventh place at the carnival, while the men finished eighth.Â
Zach Simmons finished 20th overall in the Saturday GS on the men's side and Matthew Smallhouse earned a top-30 place with 29th. Captains Will Kornya (33rd) and Trent Gutstein (36th) rounded out the top-4 skiers for the men.Â
On Sunday, Ellis followed Ferrari again with 33rd, while Gutstein (35th) and Spencer Wright (38th) led the men's squad. Friday's slalom race at Middlebury was canceled due to high winds.
The Eagles return to action this weekend as they close out the 2022 carnival season with the EISA Championships, hosted by UNH at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire.
