December 03, 2022 | Volleyball
Eagles set a new single season program record with 21st win, will take on Xavier on Wednesday evening
Chestnut Hill, Mass – Boston College swept St. John's on Saturday evening, the Eagles won by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-20. BC improves their record to 21-13 on the season and St. John's finishes their season 19-14 overall and 10-8 in the Big East.
It was back and forth between the two sides for much of set one, then after a 16-16 tie, the Eagles put together a 9-2 scoring run to clinch with kills from Seniors Kate Brennan (Endicott, N.Y) and Silvia Ianselli (Trento, Italy) and some big defensive plays from Sophomore middle blocker Julia Haggerty (Lafayette, Calif).
The Red Storm started quick in set two, taking a 10-3 lead but Boston College managed to scratch and claw their way back into it to ultimately tie it at 14-14 before going on to take a commanding 2-0 match lead thanks to some more clutch plays from the Seniors and a big boost off the bench from Sophomore setter Jane Petrie (San Diego, Calif) and Freshman middle blocker Grace Miliken (Lucas, Texas).
In set three, the Eagles could feel another sweep within range and they would not disappoint as they would go on to win five of the final six points to win the set and the match.
Silvia Ianeselli and Izzy Clavenna led the way on offense for BC, going for nine kills a piece. Ianeselli also added eight digs and Clavenna came up huge on defense going for a season-high six total blocks.
With BC's win tonight, they set a new single season program record for most wins in a season with 21, there had been only two 20 win seasons in BC Volleyball history before this year, in 2004, coached by Andrea Leonard and in 2019 which was also a Jason Kennedy coached team. Coach Kennedy gets his 79th career win at Boston College, he is now just one shy of tying Andrea Leonard's record of 80 career coaching wins. Kennedy who is finishing up his fifth season as BC's coach will have a chance to set the record in one less season then Leonard who coached for a total of seven seasons.
The Eagles will host the quarter finals of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship on Wednesday night and face Xavier.
