Eagles drop to 17-11 on the season, but hand Pitt their first set loss in two weeks
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS – Boston College fell to No.7 Pittsburgh 1-3 on Sunday afternoon, the Eagles lost by scores of 26-24, 25-11 and 25-15. The Panthers improve to 24-2 on the season and 14-0 in the ACC while BC moves to 17-11 overall and 5-9 in the conference.Â
In set one, the Panthers started quick getting out to a 9-2 lead but Boston College managed to fight their way back into in impressive fashion, they even looked like they were potentially going to steal it when they took a 24-23 lead but Pitt showed why their undefeated in the conference and one of the hottest teams in all of NCAA Volleyball by keeping their composure and winning three straight points to force deuce and ultimately clinch the set 26-24. Â
After Pittsburgh ran away with set two, it was up to BC to show some more of the fantastic resilience that they have showed all season long to force a fourth set after going down 0-2. It was back and forth for much of set three but the Eagles managed to pull away and win the set 25-18 with a 6-1 scoring run to close it out powered by some awesome defensive plays from Sophomore middle blocker Julia Haggerty (Lafayette, Calif) and Graduate middle blocker Kate Brennan (Endicott, N.Y) who each had clutch blocks on that final scoring run. This was the first set loss for Pittsburgh since October 23rd.Â
Then in set four, the Panthers' power and speed simply proved to be too much for BC as they would race out to a 19-10 lead and never look back to win 25-15.Â
For Pittsburgh, Courtney Buzzerio led the way on offense with 13 kills and Valeria Vasquez Gomez added 12 kills on a .417 hitting percentage and six digs as well.Â
For Boston College, Junior outside hitter Katrina Jensen (Temecula, Calif) had a team-high 10 kills and Julia Haggerty had one of her best performances on the season going for four kills on a .571 hitting percentage and a season-high 10 blocks.Â
The Eagles will now turn their attention to a matchup in Durham next Friday at 12 p.m vs the Duke Blue Devils.Â
