Durham, N.C – Boston College lost to Duke in five sets on Friday afternoon, the Eagles lost by scores of 18-25, 13-25 and 15-17. The Blue Devils improve to 15-11 on the season and 6-9 in the ACC while BC moves to 17-12 overall and 5-10 in the conference.
After Duke took set one, the Eagles knew they had to respond in set two to avoid another 0-2 deficit, they fell behind as many six points in set two but showed some very impressive mental fortitude to fight back into the match, rattling off a 9-0 scoring run on the way to tying up the match 25-21. BC outhit the Blue Devils .357 to .135 as a team and the aforementioned run was highlighted by three huge kills from Senior outside hitter Silvia Ianeselli (Trento, Italy) and an ace for Junior libero Anna Murphy (Zionsville, Ind).
After Duke ran away with set three to take a 2-1 lead, Boston College once again found themselves with their backs against the wall going into set four. And once again they would respond with some big plays from the middle blockers, Kate Brennan (Endicott, N.Y) and Julia Haggerty (Lafayette, Calif).
It was down to the bitter end in this one with deuce at 14-14 in set five, BC looked like they were going to steal it at 15-14 but Duke showed some real composure and poise, winning three straight points to clinch the match at 17-15.
For the Blue Devils, Gracie Johnson led the way with 24 kills and 13 digs and Rachel Richardson added 14 kills as well.
For the Eagles, Junior outside hitter Katrina Jensen posted 13 kills and two blocks and Silvia Ianeselli recorded 12 kills, eight digs and two blocks of her own. Kate Brennan also continued her hyper efficient play going for 11 kills on a team-high .500 hitting percentage.
