Freshman Collects Honor for Fourth Straight Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman center Maria Gakdeng collected her fourth consecutive ACC Freshman of the Week award, the league office announced on Monday.Â
The Lanham, Md., native is the first Eagle since Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy in 2007-08 to win the award at least four times.Â
BC went 1-1 last week with a win over Pitt on the road before falling to No. Â 2/3 Louisville on Sunday. Gakdeng averaged 11 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and shot 71.4 percent from the floor. She led the team in rebounding, blocked shots, and field goal percentage.Â
Gakdeng tied a team-high with 14 points (10 in the second half) on 7-of-8 shooting and tied a personal best with five blocks in the 75-64 victory over the Panthers on Thursday. She led the Eagles with seven rebounds and recorded a personal-high three steals on top of eight points in a valiant effort against the Cardinals.Â
Gakdeng leads the ACC in field goal percentage (.696) during league play, second in blocked shots (2.5 bpg), and is fifth in rebounding (7.7 rpg). She is second among all freshmen in the country with 33 blocks and fifth in blocked shots per game. She is the only true freshman in the nation to average at least 9.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shoot at least 65 percent from the floor.Â
