CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 20 Boston College's third period comeback stalled on Saturday night at Kelley Rink as the Eagles dropped a 5-2 decision in Hockey East play to New Hampshire.
The Wildcats swept the home-and-home series and improved to 11-10-1 (5-7-1 HEA), while BC fell below .500 in the league at 5-6-2 and dropped to 10-8-3 overall.
UNH took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission with a pair of goals in the final minutes of the opening frame. Chase Stevenson deflected Will MacKinnon's point shot past Eric Dop's glove at 17:58, and Colton Huard snuck a power play one-timer inside the near post from the left circle at 19:46.
The Wildcats added to their lead five minutes into the second when Eric Esposito squeezed a rebound past Dop's pad at the left post. Henry Wilder replaced Dop in net following the third UNH goal.
A Robert Cronin tip at 1:41 of the third handed New Hampshire a 4-0 lead, but sophomores Colby Ambrosio and Trevor Kuntar responded to cut the deficit in half.
BC pulled Wilder for an extra skater with 1:57 left in regulation and generated several chances, but UNH sealed the win with an empty-netter in the dying seconds. Mike Robinson made 31 saves for the win in the Wildcat net.
Wilder stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced during 33 minutes in relief. BC out-shot UNH 33-23 on the night, including a 12-3 edge in the third period.
