Knight Recognized as Male Eagle of the Year
May 24, 2021 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Spencer Knight was named the Male Eagle of the Year on Sunday night during the Golden Eagle Awards, earning the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College student-athlete. The Eagle of the Year Award is given annually to the male and female student-athletes who are outstanding citizens, leaders, scholars and athletes.
Knight becomes the 13th men's hockey player to receive the honor and second straight after David Cotton won the award last year. Charlotte North from the Final Four bound lacrosse team was the female Eagle of the Year recipient.Â
Knight was a First Team All-American as a sophomore this past season and became the first goaltender since Thatcher Demko in 2016 to be named Hockey East Player of the Year. He was a Top-3 Finalist for the Mike Richter Award (best goaltender in Division I) and a Top-10 Finalist for the Hobey Baker Award (best player in Division I).
Â
In his final season on the Heights, Knight was a unanimous Hockey East First Team All-Star and ranked fifth in the country in both save percentage (.932) and winning percentage (.786). He closed his career with a record of 39-12-3 between the pipes for a .750 winning percentage.
Â
Knight finished his time on the Heights tied for fifth all-time in program history with eight shutouts in only two NCAA seasons. He also ranks second all-time at Boston College in career goals against average with a mark of 2.05 in 54 starts.
Â
Knight started for the United States at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championships and helped Team USA win its first gold medal since 2017 with a 2-0 shutout of Team Canada. He set U.S. records for shutouts in a World Junior career and a single tournament.
In his first four NHL appearances for the Florida Panthers, the former 13th overall pick is 4-0-0 with a 2.32 GAA and .919 SV%. Knight has a chance to make his postseason debut tonight in Game 5 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.Â
