March 18, 2021 | Fencing
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Eleven members of the Boston College fencing team have been selected to compete in the 2021 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships, as announced Thursday by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee.
Â
On the women's side, Laura Boden and Lucy Hanson will represent the Eagles in epee, Samantha Yeh in foil and Katarina Hone and Gillian Lawlor in sabre. Daniel Gaidar and Will Smith in epee, Bin Huang and Clayton Reid in foil and Spencer Kuldell and Bolang Meng in sabre are the six Eagles on the men's side earning selections. BC's 11 qualifiers marks the most the program has ever sent to the NCAA finals.
Â
The 144-member field at the fencing championships is made up of participants from 20 member institutions. The competition is being hosted by Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, March 25-28, 2021.
Â
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
