February 15, 2021 | Skiing
EAST BURKE, Vt. – Senior Parker Biele made history over the weekend as the first Boston College skier ever to reach the podium at an EISA event, doing so with second place at the EISA Burke Alpine Carnival hosted by UVM in Vermont.
Â
With temperatures dropping as low as -14 degrees at the starting gate, Biele competed in a pair of giant slalom races on Friday, placing fifth in the opening race and second overall in the second. The captain's fourth and final run of the day (1:02.90) was the fastest in the entire field at Burke Mountain.
Â
In the men's GS races on Saturday, freshman Zach Simmons led the Eagles with a pair of top-10 finishes in his EISA debut. Simmons was fourth overall in the first race following an incredibly consistent performance and finished eighth in the second event.
Â
Biele and Simmons helped the Eagles finish third as a team in three of the four races, and second overall in the second women's GS race behind UVM.
Â
Rookie Matthew Smallhouse took ninth place in the first men's GS race for the second-best male finish of the weekend. Sophomore Will Kornya (11th) and senior Chris Bertram (12th) were back-to-back finishers in the second GS event, while Spencer Wright earned 13th in the morning race.
Â
On the women's side, freshman Lauren Geary earned 14th place in both GS races while making her collegiate debut for Boston College.
Â
BC is back in action with a pair of carnivals at the end of February. The Eagles travel to Whiteface in Lake Placid, New York for the St. Lawrence Carnival on Feb. 25-26, then host the first carnival in program history at Proctor Academy in New Hampshire on Feb. 27-28.
