Eagles Fight to the Finish in Historic Season

Volleyball goes five sets in second round loss to UConn.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Boston College volleyball team forced a deciding-fifth set before falling to Connecticut, 3-2, in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in Power Gym on Sunday evening. The Eagles, who were competing in their second postseason in three seasons, finished the 2021 campaign with a 17-17 record. The Huskies advanced to the NIVC quarterfinals to play North Florida.
BC raced out to an early lead in the first set and had to hold off UConn for a 25-21 win. The Huskies responded by winning the next two sets; 25-19 and 25-22. The Eagles kept their season alive with a 25-20 win in the fourth. The fifth was all Connecticut as the Huskies led 8-4 midway through and never looked back; cinching the match with a 15-9 win.
Caylee Parker led all player with 19 kills on 55 attacks. She added 11 digs for a double-double. UConn setter McKayla Wuensch dished out 48 assists and added 14 digs for a double-double of her own.
In the final match of her BC career, graduate middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu (Laurel, Md.) led the way with a career-high 16 kills. The Eagles' all-time leader in blocks and sets plays hit a match-best .520. Junior rightside Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) and graduate outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.) joined Chukwujekwu in double figures with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Each recorded a double-double as Clavenna added 10 digs and Naughton, who collected four service aces, 13. It marked the 12th of the season and 20th in the career for Naughton.
Sophomore setter Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) got in on the double-double action with 35 assists and 14 digs; both career-highs. Sophomore libero Anna Murphy (Zoinsville, Ind.) led the BC back row with 19 digs.
