Forsmark's Late Winner Pushes Merrimack Past No. 14 Eagles
November 06, 2021 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Filip Forsmark finished a one-timer in front with four minutes left in the third period and Merrimack posted its first win at Conte Forum since 2017 with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon to close a home-and-home series.
The 14th-ranked Eagles had their seven-game winning streak against the Warriors (4-6-0, 2-5-0 HEA) snapped as they fell to 5-4-1 (3-2-0 HEA).
Captain Marc McLaughlin scored a pair of goals in the loss for his third multi-goal game of the season. Trevor Kuntar had the other goal for the Eagles, tying the game 3-3 in the second period.
McLaughlin's first of the night came between a pair of Merrimack tallies in the first period as the Warriors took a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.
Merrimack extended its lead at 4:08 of the second when Filip Karlsson-Tagtstrom flipped a backhander blocker side on Eric Dop (22 saves) from the top of the crease.
McLaughlin answered seven minutes later, burying a rebound at the left doorstep on the power play from Brandon Kruse and Jack St. Ivany. Kuntar then knotted the score at 13:15 as the sophomore picked off a clearing attempt and fired a low shot glove side from the left wing circle.
Karlsson-Tagtstrom set up the game-winner in the closing minutes from below the goal line as he slipped a pass in front through two BC defensemen for Forsmark to one-time glove side.
Rookie Hugo Ollas made two of his 27 saves during a 6-on-5 situation in the final 90 seconds on McLaughlin and Jack McBain to preserve the win for the Warriors.
BC out-shot MC 30-26, including a 25-11 advantage over the final two periods.
