Eagles Fall in Overtime to Virginia Tech in ACC Tournament
November 03, 2021 | Men's Soccer
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Jack Dearie's shot deflected inside the right post with 3:59 left in the first overtime on Wednesday night, lifting 8-seed Virginia Tech to a 1-0 victory over 9-seed Boston College in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Thompson Field.
Â
The Eagles closed the 2021 fall season with a record of 6-7-2 (2-4-2 ACC), while the Hokies improved to 10-4-3 and earned a trip to the ACC Quarterfinals to face top-seed Pitt on Sunday.
Â
Virginia Tech held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal in a defensive match that followed a scoreless regular season matchup in Newton.
Â
Wil Jacques made a potentially goal-saving challenge late in the first half, sliding with his left leg to deny Conor Pugh from behind in the middle of the BC box.
Â
The best chance of the night for the Eagles came with under 10 minutes left in regulation, but Michael Suski's right-footed effort was pushed wide of the left post by Ben Martino for his lone save.
Â
The game-winner came off a long throw-in for the Hokies and a scramble in front of Christian Garner (2 saves). Dearie turned at the edge of the 6-yard box and his left-footed shot took a deflection off a BC defender and bounced out of Garner's reach into the side netting.
