CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshmen Alex Newhook and Spencer Knight were both named Division I All-Stars by the New England Hockey Writers Association on Tuesday. The annual awards dinner was canceled due to COVID-19.Â
Newhook also won the George Carens Award as New England's Best Rookie, while senior Julius Mattila earned the Frank Jones Trophy as the Best Defensive Forward. Schiller Family Head Coach Jerry York was the runner-up for the Clark Hodder Coach of the Year Award.Â
Last week, Newhook became the first Eagle to win the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA National Rookie of the Year. The forward was also tabbed the Hockey East Rookie of the Year and a Second Team Hockey East All-Star. Newhook led all NCAA freshmen in goals (19), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (3) in his first collegiate season. He was tied for the team-lead in scoring with 42 points to pace all first-year skaters in Hockey East.
Knight started all but one game between the pipes and was a top-5 finalist for the Mike Richter Award. The freshman was a Second Team Hockey East All-Star and a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team. Knight became just the fourth goaltender in program history to record five shutouts in a single season. He ranked fifth nationally in winning percentage (.727) and was ninth in both goals against average (1.97) and save percentage (.931).
Mattila led the team with 32 assists and was tied for the team-lead in scoring with a career-high 42 points. The senior finished the season fourth nationally in assists per game and ninth in points per game. The forward became the 82nd member of the program's 100-point club against Harvard on Feb. 10. Mattila won 54.3% of his faceoffs and was fourth in Hockey East with 334 faceoffs won. He closed the year at plus-21, good for seventh in the league.Â
