WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Alex Newhook won the Hockey East Rookie of the Year Award on Thursday, becoming the ninth Eagle in program history to receive the honor.
Newhook became BC's third Rookie of the Year winner in the last five seasons and joined a list that includes Logan Hutsko (2018), Colin White (2016), Chuck Kobasew (2001), Brian Gionta (1998), Marty Reasoner (1996), Ian Moran (1992), Brian Leetch (1987) and Ken Hodge (1985).Â
Earlier this week, Newhook was named to the Hockey East Second All-Star Team and was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team. The forward became the first Boston College rookie since White in 2016 to record 40 points in a single season. He was also just the 12th NCAA player age 19 or younger to hit 40 in the last decade.
The St. John's, Newfoundland native closed the year with 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points, ranking ninth nationally in points per game and 12th in goals per game. He was third in the country in plus-minus (+28) behind teammates Jesper Mattila and Ben Finkelstein.Â
Newhook led all NCAA freshmen in goals (19), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (3). He was tied for the team-lead in scoring and paced all first-year skaters in Hockey East, closing the season on a 12-game point streak (10-13-23).Â
Newhook was named the National Player and Rookie of the Month in February with 20 points in nine games. He was also honored as Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week three times and Hockey East Player of the Week once.
