The Boston College women's golf team placed second in the Jackrabbit Invitational this week in Nevada. The Eagles also walked away with a first place finish in the individual event as freshman Madeline Jin won the event with a +1 for three rounds at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Jin, who is a native of Belle Mead, New Jersey, was one under par in the first 18 on Monday. She was two under par in the second 18 and held the lead after two rounds. This morning, Jin held on for the victory with a 76. Her three day total was 217. This was her first collegiate victory.
"Maddie was solid - four birdies each of the first two rounds. Lots of fairways, lots of greens. It's a compliment to say it was somewhat boring golf - parts of Maddie's rounds were, lots of pars. On the par-3 17th hole, she made a pivotal up-and-down, while the SDSU player three putted for bogey. Then, on the 18th hole, she made two clutch swings to put herself in position for a 15-foot birdie try. She two-putted for par for a 2-shot win. A lot of solid, pressure-packed play by a freshman," said Head Coach Drew Kayser.
Junior Bibilani Liu placed fifth as she finished +2 (74, 76, 74 – 224). Freshman Ananya Barthakur placed tied in 17th as she was consistent in all three rounds (78, 78, 78 – 234).
Sophomore Alexa Rivas and freshman Leah Temple Lang both tied in 30th. Rivas shot a low round of 74 on the final day, while Lang shot a 78 in the second round.
The team placed second behind South Dakota State. BC three round total was 909, while South Dakota won at 896. Oral Roberts was third (910), Eastern Washington finished fourth (931) with Weber State (937) in fifth. Â
"The team played really well in some extremely tough conditions. The first two days the wind was blowing 20-30 mph, with gusts over 40 mph. Players had to factor wind into reading their putts. The spring break training prior to the Jackrabbit Invitational was crucial. Ample time to practicing off of grass, lag putting, and playing competitive rounds, along with practice in Fish Fieldhouse and Bubble time prior to departure - it all played a part in the teams success," said Kayser.
