Terriers Complete Beanpot Semifinal Comeback in Overtime

BOSTON – Boston University came back from 3-1 down in the third period and Wilmer Skoog finished a loose puck near the right post at 7:20 of overtime, lifting the Terriers over the fourth-ranked Eagles 5-4 in the first round of the 68th Beanpot Monday night at TD Garden.
The game officially ended in a tie for NCAA purposes as Boston College moved its record to 16-7-1, while BU advanced to face Northeastern in the Beanpot Championship Game next week at 10-8-7 overall. It was the sixth overtime game in the last nine Beanpot meetings between the two rivals.
BC will face Harvard in the consolation game next Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Senior captain David Cotton scored twice for the Eagles, including the game-tying goal during a 6-on-4 with a minute left in regulation to force overtime.
Rookie Alex Newhook had a goal and an assist in his Beanpot debut, while senior Julius Mattila collected a pair of assists. Sophomore Patrick Giles scored in the semifinal round for the second straight season.
The Eagles carried a two-goal cushion into the third, but David Farrance and Patrick Harper struck just 70 seconds apart for BU to tie the game. Cotton's extra attacker goal followed a tally from Robert Mastrosimone at 18:18 which gave the Terriers their first lead.
Freshman goaltender Spencer Knight made 27 saves in his first start at TD Garden.
BC finished the night with a 39-31 advantage in shots on goal and went 2-for-5 on the power play.

2:15, BC Goal (1-0) • Marc McLaughlin dished a no-look backhand pass from behind the net to the stick of Giles for his third goal of the season.
7:19, BC Goal (2-0) • On the power play, Matt Boldy fed a pass to Newhook and the freshman ripped a shot top shelf past Ashton Abel (35 saves) from just above the right goal line.
9:13, BU Goal (2-1) • From the left doorstep, Logan Cockerill slipped a pass to the top of the crease for captain Patrick Curry to pull BU back within one.
2nd Period
17:48, BC Goal (3-1) • Cotton spun a backhand toward the net from the low slot as the puck deflected off a BU defender and slipped inside the left post.
3rd Period
7:24, BU Goal (3-2) • During a 4-on-4, Farrance located a stuff attempt from Harper at the left doorstep and beat Knight past his skate with a first-time effort.
6:14, BU Goal (3-3) • Harper received a pass from Farrance in the slot and drifted to his left before ripping a shot into the top right corner off the back bar.
1:42, BU Goal (3-4) • From the right corner, Trevor Zegras fired a pass to the goalmouth and Mastrosimone one-timed the puck through Knight's five hole.
0:58, BC Goal (4-4) • Cotton took a deflected pass off Newhook's skate and lifted a quick shot over Abel's outstretched pads to send the game to OT.
Overtime
7:20, BU Goal (4-5) • Alex Vlasic threw a low angle shot toward the net from the left wing which deflected back door for Skoog, who whacked a first-time effort glove side to win the game.
UP NEXT
BC returns to Hockey East action on Friday night (Feb. 7) at Kelley Rink against No. 14 UMass Lowell. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
