No. 6 Eagles Hold On Late For 3-2 Win at Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Spencer Knight made 29 saves and No. 6 Boston College held off a late Merrimack push for a 3-2 Hockey East victory on Friday night at Lawler Arena to begin a home-and-home series.
The Eagles improved to 18-8-1 overall and 11-6-0 in Hockey East, moving into a tie for second place just two points shy of UMass with two games in hand. The Warriors fell to 7-20-3 (5-12-3 HEA).
Trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes, seniors Luke McInnis and Ron Greco netted goals in the second period to put BC ahead for good. Zach Walker assisted on both tallies for his second career multi-point performance.
Alex Newhook tallied his team-leading 14th on the power play early in the third period, extending his goal streak to five straight games. Regan Kimens cut the lead in half with seven minutes remaining just as the Warriors got a player back from the penalty box.
Knight made several stops in the closing seconds with the Merrimack net empty to preserve the points.
Boston College was perfect at 4-for-4 on the penalty kill and had a slim 32-31 edge in shots.
The last five meetings between the teams at Lawler Arena have been decided by a total of three goals.

15:12, MC Goal (0-1) • Patrick Holway wristed a shot on goal from the right point and Chase Gresick tipped it low past Knight on his backhand to open the scoring.
2nd Period
4:32, BC Goal (1-1) • McInnis knocked the puck down to the ice with his stick in the slot and fired a quick shot high blocker side to beat Jere Huhtamaa (29 saves).
8:58, BC Goal (2-1) • Following a wall battle with Walker behind the net, Greco muscled the puck inside the left post on the second chance of a stuff attempt.
3rd Period
3:50, BC Goal (3-1) • Jack McBain cut around the net to throw a backhand in front and Newhook batted the puck inside the right post from the low slot. Matt Boldy collected his 12th assist on the play.
12:55, MC Goal (3-2) • Seconds after a BC power play expired, Kimens drifted into the right wing circle and beat Knight short side high on the glove side.

The teams conclude their home-and-home series on Saturday (Feb. 15) with a 4:30 p.m. faceoff at Kelley Rink on NESN. The program will retire all-time leading goal scorer Brian Gionta's jersey during the first intermission.
