Alumni Spotlight: Makenna Newkirk '19
December 17, 2020 | Women's Hockey
In this edition of the 'Alumni Spotlight' we catch up with former two-year captain, Makenna Newkirk '19.
What is your favorite memory about your time as an Eagle, on or off the ice?
While I had some amazing times on the ice, ranging from playing in the national championship game in 2016 to winning the Beanpot three times, it's the memories off the ice that made my experience at BC so memorable. Whether it was going golfing after the season or supporting the spring sports with the rest of the team, those always stand out to me.
What are you most proud of from your time as an Eagle?
I'm proud of our program as a whole. I feel that we have built a great culture that allows you to succeed as a person, player and student at BC.
What advice would you give to your college self or current Eagles?
I would say to make the most of every moment, put in the extra work, have fun with your teammates and soak in all the knowledge from the coaching staff.
Where do you currently live and what do you do?
I currently live in Watertown with two fellow ice hockey alumni, Megan Keller and Andie Anastos, and I coach for the North American Hockey Academy with fellow BC alums Toni Ann Miano, Dana Trivigno and Katie Burt.
How did your collegiate career prepare you for life after college?
Time management is still very important in my day-to-day life like it was at BC but I would also say my collegiate career taught me to always be present and pursue my passions.
What personal or professional accomplishments are you most proud of since you graduated from Boston College?
I'm proud that I was able to pick a profession that allows me to pass on my experiences and skills to younger players.
How are you still involved with hockey?
I coach at the North American Hockey Academy and played for the PWHPA this past season.Â
What Eagle teams or athletes have you enjoyed watching since you graduated?
I'm still close friends with most of the girls on the women's ice hockey team so I love keeping up with their successes. I also work for the athletic communications office at BC doing statistics for women's hockey and soccer games. It's also always great to watch the men's hockey team play as well.
