No. 2 Eagles Earn 6-3 Win at No. 7 UMass to Sweep Series

Captain Marc McLaughlin scored a pair of goals for Boston College
AMHERST, Mass. – Captain Marc McLaughlin scored a pair of goals to lead second-ranked Boston College past No. 7 UMass 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center. The Eagles (2-0-0) swept the Minutemen (1-2-1) in their home-and-home series to open the 2020-21 season.
BC out-scored Massachusetts 2-1 in each period as McLaughlin registered his second career multi-goal game. Drew Helleson (1-1-2), Mike Hardman (1-1-2), Matt Boldy (0-2-2) and Patrick Giles (0-2-2) joined the senior with multi-point performances.
Rookie forwards Colby Ambrosio and Nikita Nesterenko each collected his first NCAA goal, while Trevor Kuntar picked up his first collegiate assist.
Spencer Knight stopped 30 UMass shots, including 16 in the third period, to post his 25th career win. Knight also earned a secondary assist on the Eagles' fifth goal.
BC converted on its only power play chance through Helleson and killed off both UMass power plays.

1st 13:55, BC (1-0) | Helleson set up Giles on a 2-on-1 with McLaughlin, who finished his linemate's cross-zone pass first time past a sprawling Lindberg.
1st 15:36, UMass (1-1) | Philip Lagunov located a rebound near the right post and found the back of the net to knot the score.
1st 18:21, BC (2-1) | Boldy directed a pass into the high slot for Helleson, who stepped into a one-timer and beat Lindberg blocker side on the power play.
2nd 1:30, BC (3-1) | Hardman created a turnover just outside the UMass zone and found Ambrosio at the left doorstep. The rookie followed his own shot near the goal line and lifted the puck past Lindberg.
2nd 10:56, UMass (3-2) | Gaudet cut around the BC net and slipped a pass to Oliver MacDonald, who beat Knight through heavy traffic from the right circle.
2nd 12:44, BC (4-2) | From the right point, Kuntar spun a pass across the UMass zone for McLaughlin, who fluttered a shot through traffic inside the right corner.
3rd 7:54, UMass (4-3) | Knight made the initial save on Gaudet, but the forward shoveled a backhand into the net on the rebound.
3rd 13:11, BC (5-3) | Boldy squeezed past a double team along the left wing and dropped a pass into the slot for Hardman, who buried a low one-timer.
3rd 19:49, BC (6-3) | Boston College won a puck battle in the defensive corner and Nesterenko found the open net from behind his own blue line.
