Volleyball Falls in Weekend Opener at Pitt

The Boston College volleyball team battled to a four-set loss against the No. 11 Panthers on Friday.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Boston College volleyball team lost to No. 11 Pittsburgh, 3-1, at Fitzgerald Field House on Friday night. The Eagles, who wore masks during the match, lost by scores of 9-25, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-19. The Panthers, who wore gaiters around their necks only when on the floor, improved to 1-2.

Following Pitt's dominant first set, BC scored first and led 2-1 in the second; leading the rest of the way in a match-evening effort, in which the Eagles hit a collective .345. Boston College ended the set on a 3-0 run, capped by a service ace from senior outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.).

In the third, the two sides traded brief runs without gaining any serious momentum. The Eagles got within a point at 14-13, but a challenge by the Panthers was ruled a BC touch and the point flipped; shifting the Pitt lead to three. The set won by the Eagles was their first against Pittsburgh since 2013; ending a stretch of seven consecutive sweeps.

The fourth set featured 11 ties; the last of which was at 13-13. Pitt's final point came on a successful challenge; their second of the night.

Kayla Lund led all player with 25 kills and hit .348 for a Panther team that hit a collective .288. Freshman outside hitter Katrina Jensen (Temecula, Calif.) led Boston College with 10 kills and contributed three blocks. The Eagles posted 11 blocks to Pitt's nine. Senior middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu (Laurel, Md.) posted a match-high seven. She is now tied for fifth all-time at BC with 326 career blocks.

In her first career start, freshman libero Anna Murphy (Zionsville, Ind.) registered a team-leading 11 digs with three assists and two service aces. Freshman setter Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.) led the BC offense with 17 assists and added seven digs. Sophomore right side Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) recorded a career-best nine kills.
