Clemson Hangs On to Beat BC in ACC First Round

CARY, N.C. – 12th-seeded Clemson came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat No. 13 seed Boston College 4-2 on Wednesday in the first round of the ACC Championship at Cary Tennis Park.
The Eagles conclude their season at 7-17, while the Tigers (10-16) move on to face 5-seed Miami on Thursday.
After helping Clemson secure the doubles point, Pierre-Louis Dodens was forced to retire in the first set down 3-1 against Max Mendelsohn to even the overall score at one. Derek Austin then handed the Eagles a 2-1 lead as he beat No. 92 Simon Baudry convincingly in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles.
In No. 3 singles, Teodor Giusca outlasted Markus Nordby in a first set tiebreaker before winning the match to pull the Tigers even. Alexander Chieffalo won his first set 6-0 against Jacob Jahn in the No. 6 slot, but Jahn came back to win the final two sets 7-5, 6-2.
The clinching match came in the No. 5 slot as Conor Mullins gutted out a second set tiebreaker 7-5 to force a decisive third set, but Mike Agee edged the graduate student 6-3.
Chris Grasel led Yizhou Liu 9-8 in a third set tiebreaker in No. 2 singles, but the match went unfinished following Mullins' defeat.
