Eagles Face Clemson Wednesday to Open ACC Tournament
April 16, 2019 | Men's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 13 seed Boston College men's tennis begins the 2019 ACC Championship on Wednesday morning (April 17) with a 9 a.m. matchup against the 12th-seeded Clemson Tigers at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina. The winner will advance to face No. 5 seed Miami on Thursday morning.
EAGLE OUTLOOK
This is the second straight season in which Boston College has faced the same opponent in the first round of the ACC Tournament as it did on the final weekend of the regular season. Last year, the Eagles traveled to Georgia Tech in the regular season finale, then fell to the Yellow Jackets at ACC's. Due to inclement weather, the match was moved indoors to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of UNC.
This year's Boston College squad enters the ACC Championship at 7-16 overall. The Eagles suffered a pair of tight defeats to Clemson and No. 40 Georgia Tech last weekend on the Heights, but rebounded to shut out Bentley 7-0 on Sunday night. BC's last meeting with Clemson in postseason play came in the 2014 ACC Championship as the fifth-seeded Tigers advanced with a 4-0 victory.
REMATCH
The schools met last Friday night as Clemson won the final two singles matches to clinch a 5-2 ACC victory over Boston College at the Flynn Recreation Complex. The Tigers began the match by winning the doubles point following 6-3 and 6-4 wins from the No. 1 and 2 slots.
Â
BC tied the score at one when Pierre-Louis Dodens retired after dropping the first set to Max Mendelsohn 6-3 in No. 4 singles. The Tigers regained the lead at 2-1 when Yizhou Liu defeated Chris Grasel in straight sets, and Teodor Guisca added another point as he came back to beat Markus Nordby 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Â
Conor Mullins brought the Eagles back within one with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Mike Agee, but Simon Baudry held off Derek Austin in three sets to clinch the match for Clemson at No. 1 singles.
SCOUTING CLEMSON
The Tigers enter the ACC Championship at 9-16 overall after a 2-10 ACC regular season. Clemson snapped a nine-match losing streak by beating BC on the Heights last Friday, but fell 5-0 at No. 27 Notre Dame on Sunday in the regular season finale.Â
Baudry is the 102nd-ranked player in the nation in the most recent ITA singles rankings. The sophomore earned a top-25 upset at No. 1 singles during a 4-2 loss to No. 29 Duke at last year's ACC Championship. Clemson leads the all-time series 17-1 over the Eagles.
