Women's tennis upset No. 10 Syracuse 4-3, Clermont wins 6K at USA XC Championships
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's tennis team and women's track and field team member Nicole Clermont have been named the Nissan Eagles of the Week following their performances this past weekend.Â
The women's tennis team upset 10th-ranked Syracuse 4-3 in the ACC opener for its first victory over a top-10 program in team history. Spanish rookie Laura Lopez clinched the upset by beating Dina Hegab 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles slot roughly five hours into the home match. Lopez won the first set of the deciding match in a tiebreaker, setting up a dramatic second set as the rookie tried to clinch the upset. With a 5-3 lead and Hegab serving at deuce, Lopez's return was sent wide left to make it official as the Eagles stormed the court. With the win, BC improved to 7-0 to start the spring season and 1-0 in conference play.Â
The freshman distance runner Clermont competed at the USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, winning the 6-Kilometer race with a time of 21:14.0. The win qualified Clermont for the IAAF World Class Cross Country Championships in Denmark on March 30.Â
