Former All-American guard to be honored in conjunction with BC/Virginia Tech game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — In conjunction with the January 25 game versus Virginia Tech, Boston College Athletics will retire the jersey of former Eagles' All-American Troy Bell.
"We are proud to honor Troy Bell's career as a Boston College Eagle and hang his banner in the rafters at Conte Forum," said Martin Jarmond, the William V. Campbell Director of Athletics. "Troy was a dynamic player, prolific scorer finishing not only as BC's all-time leading scorer, but the top scorer in all of college basketball during his four years on the Heights."
A two-time consensus All-American in 2001 and 2003, Bell finished his four-year career at Boston College as the program's all-time leading scorer, with 2,632 points. During that span, from 1999-2003, Bell was the top scorer in all of college basketball, at 21.6 points per game.
The Big East Rookie of the Year in 1999-2000, Bell was also one of only six players to earn Big East Player of the Year honors twice. The Minneapolis, Minn. native was the league's top player as a sophomore in 2000-01 and senior in 2002-03 and was a three-time First Team All-Big East selection from 2000-03.
As a sophomore, Bell helped lead BC to a 27-5 overall record and the Big East regular season title. He also earned the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Big East Tournament, leading the Eagles to the 2001 conference championship at Madison Square Garden.
On the court, Bell helped lead Boston College to three postseason berths - including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002, as well as a trip to the NIT in 2003.
Â
In addition to his scoring prowess, Bell's name still ranks at the top of the Boston College men's basketball record book. He is the school's all-time leader in career 3-pointers (300) and free throws (810) made, and his 86.8% career free throw percentage is still the standard bearer among all BC men's basketball players.
The 2003 Eagle of the Year, Bell was selected 16th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2003 NBA Draft, before being traded to Memphis on draft night.
