BC golf duo set to compete from May 23-27, 2020 at Philadelphia Cricket Club
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College golfers Christian Cavaliere and Mac Webster qualified for the 2020 United States Amateur Four-Ball Championship, set to be held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club from May 23-27, 2020.
The duo combined to shoot 67 at Foxborough C.C. in Foxborough, Mass. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, one stroke behind the leaders. Cavaliere and Webster will now advance to the national championship tournament this coming Memorial Day weekend.
The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship is among the newest national championship events sponsored by the USGA. Each team or side is comprised of two players – although one player can constitute a side – and unlike foursomes (alternate shot) they each play their own ball and the lower score among the side is counted for each hole. So if Player A scores a 5 and Player B scores a 4, the side's score is a 4.
Each side will play 36 holes of stroke play to reduce the field down to the lowest 32 for match play. The match-play draw will be seeded according to stroke-play scores and will be contested over the final three days to determine a national champion. The rules for four-ball are essentially the same for both stroke and match play with a few nuances; one being teammates and their caddies can offer advice to each other, something not seen in a singles match.
Philadelphia Cricket Club is home to three courses: St. Martin's - a nine-hole course - and Wissahickon and Militia Hill. The St. Martins Course, built by Willie Tucker in 1895, was the site of the 1907 and 1910 U.S. Open Championships. The Wissahickon Course, which will host both the stroke-play qualifying and match-play portions of the championship, was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, who was a club member, and opened for play in 1922. The Militia Hill Course, named for the deep Revolutionary War history of the area, was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry and opened in 2002. It will be used during the championship for stroke-play qualifying only.
