Boston College Ranks Among Nation's Elite in Graduation Success Rate

BC registered the eighth-best GSR among all FBS-level universities across the country
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College ranks eighth in the nation in overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in all sports among FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools. The NCAA released the most recent GSR information today.

BC boasted an overall GSR of 94, for the class of student-athletes that entered the university in 2012. Boston College's GSR was fourth-best in the ACC and topped only by Northwestern (98), Notre Dame (98), Duke (97), Vanderbilt (97), Stanford (96), Tulane (95), and Wake Forest (95) among FBS institutions.

Since the GSR's inception, Boston College has earned a mark of 94 or better in all 14 GSR reports, which first date back to the class of student-athletes that entered in 1998.

In the latest GSR rate release, 12 BC teams scored a perfect 100 GSR: men's cross country/track & field, men's golf, men's skiing, men's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's cross country/track & field, women's golf, women's ice hockey, women's lacrosse, women's skiing, women's swimming & diving, and women's volleyball.

Seventeen of Boston College's 23 athletics programs scored a GSR of 90 or better and 20 of BC's 23 programs scored at or better than the national GSR of 88.

BC football ranked third in the ACC with an 90 GSR. Men's basketball registered a GSR of 86, while women's basketball posted a GSR of 93.
More student-athletes than ever are graduating from college, according to the most recent Division I Graduation Success Rate data released today by the NCAA. The single-year rate for student-athletes who enrolled in college in 2012 increased 1 percentage point to 89% - the highest ever.

The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiatives, which were to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. Institutions are held accountable for transfer students – unlike the federal graduation rate – as well as midyear enrollees. The GSR is calculated both overall for a university, as well as for each sport sponsored by a school.
