Eagles Open Carnival Season in Slalom at Whiteface
January 11, 2019 | Skiing
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Boston College ski team began its 2019 alpine season on Friday at Whiteface Mountain as the slalom competition kicked off the St. Lawrence Carnival and the EISA season. Due to windy conditions, the slalom took place instead of the giant slalom to open the competition.
Â
"We came into today with four out of 10 starters in their first carnival and another three entering their sophomore year," said first-year head coach Craig Marshall. "Considering that inexperience and the extremely challenging snow conditions, course sets, and race trail, we had a tremendous day. Some highlights were certainly top 30's from Parker Biele, Madeline Davis, Trent Gutstein, and Bobby Ryan (all underclassmen). We were also thrilled to see freshman Carleigh Leyman in 13th after the first run before falling in run 2."
On the women's side, Carleigh Leyman registered a time of 47.69 seconds and sat in 13th place overall after the first run from bib 40, but she was unable to complete the second run in her collegiate debut. Parker Biele was the top Eagle finisher as she took 26th with a combined time of 1:44.08 in her two slalom runs.
Â
Madeline Davis was four spots behind in 30th as she posted a time of 1:45.99. Kelsie Grant (1:49.86) and senior captain Amanda Steffey (1:50.70) were back-to-back in 39th and 40th respectively for the women.Â
Â
Trent Gutstein led the men's team in the slalom, collecting 23rd place with a combined time of 1:38.56, including a sub-49 second time in his second run. Newcomer Bobby Ryan placed 29th for BC in 1:43.61 as he also finished his second run in less than 49 seconds. Captain Aaron Taylor was unable to finish his run for the Eagles.
