HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Eagles jumped out to a 3-1 start, later doubling up on the Blue Devils, 8-4, on an ace from sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu. Duke closed in, tying the set at 11 all, including a point won from a successful Blue Devil's challenge. Â
Set 2 – BC led the second set early, holding a 9-3 advantage that included five unanswered points to force a Duke timeout. DU closed the gap, going on a 6-2 run to trail just 11-9 and driving the Eagles to use their own regroup. BC edged Duke 6-5 (17-14) but the Blue Devils capitalized on three-straight BC errors to take four points for an 18-17 lead. Duke went 7-5 over the next 12 to win the set, 25-22, and take the 2-0 lead.
Â
Set 3 – Duke started the set with a 7-4 lead, opening up the game with a 5-2 surge to lead 12-6 at the BC timeout. A 6-4 run Eagles' run, including three-straight kills from rookie Jewel Strawberry, cut into the DU lead, 16-12. A 6-1 Duke run gave the Blue Devils a 22-13 advantage before the Eagles went on a 4-3 run, but the Duke lead was too much to overcome so late and the Eagles fell, 25-17, in the final set.
